Wild bergamot, or bee balm, is usually red. This white variety we saw while hiking in Shenandoah National Park was attracting the attention of several Bombus vagans, the half-black bumblebee. Bees and other pollinators are in decline due to habitat destruction and pesticides. Seeing them buzzing cheerily and clambering over the blooms of wildflower meadow was a treat.
