Taking A Detour

I usually paint wildlife, but recently I read a blog post about Belle, the Great American Farm Dog. She became a service dog for a paraplegic farmer after he won a contest in 1996. On at least one occasion she saved his life. You can read more of Belle’s service dog story by clicking here.

Belle’s story and photo interested me so much! Upon receiving permission to paint her, I’m taking a detour from flowers, landscapes, and wildlife. The photo is a study drawing of Belle’s head prior to starting the painting. I’m still trying to decide whether to include her whole body or just the head and chest area. Her eyes are warm, calm, and confident – I hope I can get their expression right!
