August has a lot going on! “Pennsylvania Pastoral” is still on display at the Sandler Center. The Artist’s Reception on 8/3 was a glitzy event, complete with a string quartet, cash bar, and buffet table. Ted, Kevin, and I enjoyed viewing the works by other students at Virginia Beach School of Art. I learned an important lesson – to invest in a fancier frame for future shows! Mine stood out among the ornate frames as being very plain. Well, it was a rookie mistake and won’t be repeated.
Now I’m working hard to get ready for 20 of my paintings to go on display at the Central Library in Chesapeake. All 20 must be framed and have picture wire attached along the back. Since we have a dive trip to Roatan scheduled later this month I need to get everything finished by the end of next week. A few more trips to the art supply store ought to do it… in the meantime the studio is a real mess! (The colorful face on the table isn’t mine btw).
I’m also finishing the painting you see on the easel. It’s a portrait of the baby giraffe at the Virginia Zoo when she was three weeks old. I’m showing her with her mother, Imara, hovering protectively behind her. You can tell from the “blocking in” stage shown below that I’m making progress.
I added a painting to the website today too! It’s called “Caribbean Octopus”, showing the fellow we were lucky enough to see in the daytime exploring the reef. I considered calling it “turquoise octopus” because I tried to capture that wonderful water’s color in the Caribbean.
New month, new conservation organization to support! Ocean Conservancy will receive 20% of all sales during the month of August. Founded in 1972 by Bill Kardash and inspired by John Denver, their goals are:
By working together, Ocean Conservancy seeks solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.
Their programs include finding solutions to marine debris, protecting the Arctic, restoring the Gulf of Mexico, and fighting ocean acidification. As a diver and nature lover, I’m so happy to support Ocean Conservancy.
Have you wondered what happens if a month goes by and I haven’t sold anything? In that case I make a modest donation of my own to the conservation group of the month. Either way I’m supporting causes I believe in – but the more I sell, the more I can give.
